PROFESSOR CESARE GALLI, born Brescia, Italy, April 8, 1962; admitted, 1989; 2001, Supreme Court.

Career: Since 1986 he practised law in Studio Legale Avv. Prof. Adriano Vanzetti e Associati, Milan, first as associate and then as partner, dealing with important litigation in Europe regarding all the branches of IP Law, in particular Patents and Trade Marks, and often tackling cross-border problems too (he is also the author of an important essay on this issue).
In 1999, together with Professor Vanzetti, he obtained the first Italian final ruling in biotech patents.
From the beginning of 2004, he decided to set up his own legal practice, which has become increasingly prominent in the IP field.
In 2004 Professor Galli obtained the first Italian ruling assessing the validity of a computer implemented invention patent. In 2005 the firm obtained and enforced successfully the first ex parte orders ever granted in Italy of seizure and description of secret documents and computer files stolen by former employees. Again in 2005 and in 2006 the firm secured key decisions for the protection of trademarks having a reputation in Italy. Likewise in 2006 the firm represented successfully an unregistered trademark owner in the first Italian case concerning the protection of unregistered trademarks according to the new Italian IP Code against parasitical exploitation and look-alike.
In 2004 Professor Galli was called by the Parliamentary Commission of Production Activities of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy as one of the experts giving their opinions on the new Italian IP Code. In 2005, he was appointed as a Member of the Governmental Commission in charge of revising and amending the Italian IP Code. In 2006 Professor Galli was appointed by the Italian Government member of the Technical Committee instituted at the High Commission for the Fight against Infringement. While practising as a lawyer, he also has been successful in his academic career, becoming Full Professor of IP Law and writing numerous publications including the most well known commentary on Italian Trademark Law (written together with Professor Vanzetti).
He also organised and chaired important IP Law conventions ("The Future of Trademarks Faced with the Challenges of Globalisation", 2001; "The New Frontiers of Patent Law", 2002; "IP Law and the Agricultural Product Processing Sector", 2003; “The invasion of fakes: defending the original product on the global market”, 2004; “The value of trade marks: Registering, Protecting and Enhancing Trade Marks and Appellations of Origin”, 2005; “The Strength of Innovation: the Protection of Technological Innovation and Design and the Instruments at the Disposal of Companies”, 2006; “Trade Marks, Marketing, Advertising: the Law and Strategies for Business Communication on the Global Market”, 2007).

As Director of the Italian Trade Marks Board of the Italian Group of AIPPI, Professor Cesare Galli represented Italy at the AIPPI Congress held in Geneva in 2004 and at the AIPPI ExCo held in Berlin in 2005 and in Singapore in 2007, drawing up, together with other members of the Board the Italian Reports on Question Q 188 dedicated to Conflicts between Trademark Protection and Freedom of Expression, Question Q191 relating to Relationship between Trademarks and Geographical Indications and Question Q195 relating to Limitations to Trademarks Rights.
At the AIPPI Congress held in Gothenburg in 2006 he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Working Committee on Question Q 191 and participated at the conference in order to illustrate the Resolution during the work of the Executive Committee. At the AIPPI ExCo meeting held in Singapore in 2007 he was appointed Chairman of the Working Committee on Question Q 195, illustrating the resolution then adopted.
